Supplies: 1 Skein Cat Mountain Fiber Arts Fusion 500 Yarn (457 Meters/500 Yards, Worsted Weight). Sample Garment Crocheted in Alpine Autumn.

US Size G Crochet Hook Cat Mountain Fiber Arts Fusion 250 (Worsted Weight)

Gauge: Approximately 4 Stitches and 4 Rows = 2.5cm/1 Inch Cat Mountain Fiber Arts Fusion 400 (Fingering Weight)

Gauge is not critical, but if you have a much looser gauge than listed, you may run out of yarn if you follow the pattern exactly.

Lay out the five balls of yarn that were in your skein, and decide in what order you would like to use them. The sample is crocheted starting with one of the smooth yarns, and I alternated smooth and fuzzy for the first five sets of rows, then repeated the yarns in the same order two more times for a total of 15 rows.

Abbreviations: sc – single crochet dec – decrease (per the decrease instructions below) BO – bind off – or pull the end of the yarn through the loop and tug gently to snug

2 Decreases are worked thus: *Insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, draw up a loop, leave stitch on hook.** Repeat from * to ** two more times; there will be three loops on the hook. Yarn over and draw through all three loops on the hook. You have decreased two stitches into one.

3 Decreases are worked thus: *Insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, draw up a loop, leave stitch on hook.** Repeat from * to ** three more times; there will be four loops on the hook. Yarn over and draw through all four loops on the hook. You have decreased three stitches into one.

The sample is approximately 100 inches long and 5 inches wide. This is a very long scarf, so you may choose to crochet a shorter, wider scarf. The pattern repeat is 14 stitches, plus an additional 4 stitches for the edges. Therefore, if you wish to make a shorter scarf, you should decrease the number in the chain row by increments of 14.

Instructions for the Zig, Then Zag, Retro Muffler:

Leaving a tail approximately 6 inches long, chain 480 Stitches.

Row 1: Turn work, and dec 2. *sc in the next 5 loops, three sc in the next loop, sc in the next 5 loops, dec 3** Repeat from * to ** 34 times, sc in the next five loops, dec 2. BO at the end of the row, leaving a tail approximately 6 inches long.

Do not turn your work. Choose your next yarn, and make a slip knot on your crochet hook to start your next stitch (leave an approximately 6 inch tail), and begin the next row at the start of the previous row, with the same side facing you.

Row 2: Work as Row 1, binding off at the end (leave a six inch tail), NOT turning, and beginning the next row with the third yarn of your choice, at the start of the previous row.

Continue as above with all five yarns. With the number of stitches listed above you will have enough yarn to complete 15 rows.

Finishing: Knot the tails you left at the beginning and end of each row into a tidy fringe. If desired, soak in wool wash, roll in a towel to squeeze out excess water, and pin on a soft surface to dry. Wear and look amazing!

This can be worn pulled down over your arms like a capelet or bunched up around your neck for a very smooshy and warm cowl.
